HP cuts packaging by 97 percent and wins award

HP has reduced the packaging materials used in one of its notebooks (the HP Pavilion dv6929wm) by an amazing 97 percent. The notebook is shipped in a “sturdy and stylish” reusable bag, rather than a box. The bag protects the machine during shipping and can be put straight onto store display shelves. Fewer trucks are apparently needed to ship the notebooks to stores. And, when you take your new notebook home and unpack it, you don’t have a pile of styrofoam and cardboard to throw away.

HP’s design won a challenge put out by US retail giant Wal-Mart. It looks like the HP Pavilion dv6929 is only available in Wal-Mart stores. But let’s hope this sets a new trend in the packaging of electronics that eventually filters down to us here in SA.

Thirty percent of the goods produced in China for export are apparently purchased by one US retail giant, Wal-Mart. And as part of moves by the mega-retailer to green up its supply chain, it plans to hold a meeting with about 1,000 Chinese producers to push them to reduce their environmental impact, Greenbiz.com reports. “The company plans to reduce the amount of packaging used by products by 5 percent by 2013 and created a packaging scorecard to help suppliers see where they can make improvements.” Read more on Greenbiz.com.
